Development of a Synthetic Eye
In order to provide a repeatable and non-biological eye injury test method, a synthetic eye was designed. A prototype two-piece eye, the Virginia Tech Synthetic Eye (VTSE), was produced. It has the same dimensions as the human eye, and a pressure transducer included in its posterior channel. Additional work is needed to validate the model using the measured pressure values and correlating these values to risk of eye injuries. The VTSE has applications in automobile safety, military restraints, and sports biomechanics.
