Virginia Tech child helmet study to include more kids

Feb. 22, 2012 – BLACKSBURG, VA —

Results of a child helmet study involving a youth football team from Montgomery County were a surprise to Dr. Stefan Duma, a Virginia Tech Biomechanics professor and one of the study’s key researchers.

“When we first started this study we didn’t think we’d get any impacts and a lot of the stories were that six, seven, and eight-year olds can’t hit or run fast enough to have really any head impact exposure,” said Duma.

But results showed children were taking hits, considered high even for college players. Most of those hits were in practice.
